Kargil/Leh, July 16, 2025 — In a significant political development, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kavinder Gupta as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh. Gupta officially assumed charge on 15th July 2025, succeeding Brigadier (Retd.) B.D. Mishra, who served as LG since February 2023.
Gupta, a seasoned politician from Jammu, is the first political leader to take up the top constitutional post in Ladakh since its creation as a Union Territory in 2019. His appointment is being seen as a strategic move by the Centre, especially at a time when crucial talks on granting Sixth Schedule status and statehood to Ladakh are expected to resume later this month.
Political Profile
Kavinder Gupta has served in various political and administrative roles, including as Mayor of Jammu, Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, and Deputy Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2018. Known for his administrative experience and grassroots connections, Gupta is expected to play a pivotal role in navigating the political aspirations of Ladakh’s diverse communities.
