Leh, July 11, 2025
In a significant development in Ladakh’s ongoing struggle for constitutional safeguards, the Apex Body Leh has officially reiterated its unwavering support for environmentalist and education reformer Shri Sonam Wangchuk’s planned Fast unto Death. The fast is set to commence if the long-anticipated meeting between the Apex Body Leh, Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is not convened before July 15, 2025.
In a press statement released today, the Apex Body declared that it had resolved to actively participate in the civil action and called upon the citizens of Ladakh to rise in peaceful unity. The decision underscores the region’s collective call for Statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
As part of the preparations, the Apex Body has instructed all Namdarbars/Gobas Presidents and Block Presidents across Leh District to conduct consultations and organize coordinated efforts to support the fast. These grassroots-level discussions are expected to play a vital role in mobilizing the community and strategizing actions during the protest period.
The Apex Body also made an emotional appeal to the general public: “If you wish to express solidarity with the cause and join the voluntary fast alongside Shri Sonam Wangchuk, you are invited to come forward.” Interested individuals can register their names with members of the Apex Body, Organising Committee representatives, or by contacting the following numbers: +91 88003 26282 or +91 97975 68192.
Calling it a “crucial moment in Ladakh’s journey toward constitutional justice and democratic empowerment,” the Apex Body emphasized that meaningful change can only be achieved through united, nonviolent struggle.
The announcement has sparked a wave of discussions across social and political circles, with many viewing this as a decisive stand for Ladakh’s future. Citizens, student unions, and civil society organizations are expected to rally behind the movement in the coming days.
With the deadline for government engagement fast approaching, the spotlight now turns to New Delhi, where the response from the Ministry of Home Affairs is awaited. Meanwhile, the people of Ladakh prepare to stand shoulder to shoulder, echoing their collective demand for justice and dignity under the Indian Constitution.
